Mid-Cycle Meltdown?: Jobless Claims May 15 2008
Today, the Department of Labor released their latest read of Joblessness showing seasonally adjusted “initial” unemployment claims increased 6,000 to 371,000 from last week’s unrevised 365,000 claims and “continued” claims increased 28,000 resulting in an “insured” unemployment rate of 2.3%.It’s very important to understand that today’s report continues to reflect employment weakness that is wholly consistent with past recessionary episodes and that unequivocal clarity will more than likely come in the next few releases.
Historically, unemployment claims both “initial” and “continued” (ongoing claims) are a good leading indicator of the unemployment rate and inevitably the overall state of the economy.
The following chart (click for larger version) shows “initial” and “continued” claims, averaged monthly, overlaid with U.S. recessions since 1967 and from 2000.
As you can see, acceleration to claims generally precedes recessions.
This flattening period demarks the “mid-cycle slowdown” where for various reasons growth has generally slowed but then resumed with even stronger growth.
So, looking at the post-“doc com” recession period we can see the telltale signs of a potential “mid-cycle” slowdown and if we were to simply reflect on the history of employment as an indicator of the health and potential outlook for the wider economy, it would not be irrational to conclude that times may be brighter in the very near future.
But, adding a little more data I think shows that we may in fact be experiencing a period of economic growth unlike the past several post-recession periods.
Look at the following chart (click for larger version) showing “initial” and “continued” unemployment claims, the ratio of non-farm payrolls to non-institutional population and single family building permits since 1967.
Another feature is that housing was apparently buffeted by the response to the last recession, preventing it from fully correcting thus postponing the full and far more severe downturn to today.
I think there is enough evidence to suggest that our potential “mid-cycle” slowdown, having been traded for a less severe downturn in the aftermath of the “dot-com” recession, may now be turning into a mid-cycle meltdown.

This is a nonpartisan post. What follows is the truth.
I had a career as a computer technician for several years, it was not glamorous, it was stressful, but at least it was an opportunity, and I had job offers available.
However, soon after 9/11/01, my 401K stock started to plummet. Then they laid me off my job along with at least 250 other high tech workers. Since that day I have had a very difficult and humiliating experience trying to find work.
I received a "dislocated worker" grant to attend school. So after looking at the Bureau of Labor, etc, statistics, I was advised that computer technicians would be in great demand. Therefore I earned an Associate of Science with tax payer money and some of my own savings. However, the dreadful truth is that the degree did not find me a job. The govt stats that I relied upon were just LIES.
The jobs have been outsourced. The jobs have been given to H1-B visa types. And get this, illegal immigrants from south of the border are too smart to settle for just physical labor. They are employed by high tech firms such as AT&T. When I applied to AT&T for a nework technician job, the Hispanic manager's pigeon English was practically incomprehensible. In the background similar Hispanic accents could be heard from the other technicians.
When I have applied for jobs I have been ridiculed and humiliated, sometimes it felt like I was considered a "gringo" or something.
But the mistreatment came from all types, even "regular Americans".
As a result I have been paying insurance out of my pocket, or not insured at all. This means that I have neglected to get medical attention because I cannot afford it. How embarrassing! How infuriating to know that my taxes go to free medical for illegals.
As the housing prices increased, I fell between the cracks of American society. I could not find a job, afford a house, or proper medical treatment. Furthermore I have been eating very poorly trying to save money. I sleep on a mattress on the floor of an over-priced basement apartment. Apartment rates are rising, as all the apartments have been converted to over-priced condos. Condos are a poor investment.

So you see, when I read these govt reports on jobless claims, it just makes me hopping mad, I have absolutely lost faith in this country. America has stabbed me in the back. Is this the freedom that we are killing people all over the planet, forcing this economic debt-slavery on foreign peoples? No wonder they fight back!
I would like to clarify that the real culprit is the corruption of American govt by private interests, i.e., Fascism.
The poor Hispanic peoples south of the border are being victimized by the same monsters. Did you know that they are selling genetically modified seeds to farmers, the resulting plants will not bear seed, the patented seeds must be repurchased every year, along with required patented fertilizer, etc.
So everybody is getting screwed by the plutocracy, then they turn people against each other, to distract from the truth. Very clever, eh?
My point here is that there is a dire employment problem. People are really, really suffering.
Do people understand this or are they all just brainwashed by the matrix?

Oh, I forgot to mention that I have been repeatedly ripped-off where I have performed work as a contractor, only never to be paid.
I get calls regularly from people with Indian accents, they always have a job for me that never materializes. They always call with a job but first I must provide my social security number, or my middle name as it appears on my passport, many times they claim to represent AT&T.
I have read that they must first prove that they offered the job to an American to justify hiring the H1-B. It seems like a scam.
I am trying to move to a new city to find work, but since apartments were converted condos it is very difficult to find an apartment. Never mind all the scam artists waiting to prey upon you, never mind the people hopelessly ruined by investing in said condos.
As I said, this is a nonpartisan comment. However, it cannot be ignored that since Bush W was elected, the stock market immediately tanked, the WTC was attacked, we went to war, the record surplus went to a record deficit, the housing bubble destroyed the middle class, the job market for Americans died, the rule of law broke down with govt backed illegal immigration, conspiracy in human trafficking for labor, RICCO violations, flagrant disregard for the law by the govt and the corporations that own the govt. The fed even tried to get more power, not sure if they got it.
Nobody knows or cares until it happens to them, just like that catholic priest said when the nazis came for him, there was nobody left to care. Nobody cares until it directly affects them.
